Speaking up For Science Week

Dr Jennifer Lavers recently gave a presentation about her research on plastic pollution on remote islands at Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery as part of National Science Week. The theme of the event, when Earth and space collide, was supported by a talk from Brittany Trubody about mass extinction events throughout Earth’s history.

“We need to start calling plastic what it is – toxic waste”

— Dr Jennifer Lavers

After the talks, a debate was held where sides argued research funding for “space vs species”, discussing the merits and importance of funding space exploration versus funding conservation and research here on Earth.
