2025 expedition to Pitcairn

Building on the successes of our DucieBird project (part of Operation Putuputu in 2024), Adrift Lab are excited to announce we are recipients of funding for the 2025 expedition to the Pitcairn Islands!

The funding was oversubscribed, with many high-quality applications from amazing scientists hoping to undertake research in the region: thus, we are incredibly grateful and excited to have been awarded a berth aboard the Silver Supporter, which will carry us safely from the Mangareva Islands to Pitcairn, Henderson, and Oeno Atoll in the South Pacific.

In September, Dr Jenn will spend about a month travelling to this remote region and living aboard the ship with an amazing crew and around half-a-dozen other researchers from around the world. Jenn is fortunate to have visited Pitcairn and Henderson Island a couple times before, but Oeno Atoll will be a new one on her list. Adrift Lab’s project, titled “SulaTalks” refers to the genus of the seabirds (Sula/Masked Boobies) we’ll be focusing on and the information they can provide us, acting as “canaries on the coal mine”, if we choose to listen. It also reflects the toxicological aspect (“tox”) of monitoring environmental health.

Can’t wait to return to this stunning region, and be reunited with our amazing friends and colleagues on Pitcairn Island!!
