Collaborating for Children’s Literature

Over the past few months, Dr Jennifer Lavers has been working with children’s author Nick Lloyd Davies on his new book ‘Katie Helps a Turtle with Tummy Ache’. The book includes a foreword from Dr Lavers, and the plot was inspired by her 2017 paper which documents plastic on Henderson Island in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The book is the latest in Davies’ series starring the character Katie. In this installment, Katie discovers that many sea creatures are suffering on Henderson Island because of plastic debris washing up on its shores. The book’s fantastical elements help to capture the attention of children, while also educating them about the impacts of anthropogenic debris on the marine environment.
