Catarina completed her BSc and MSc at the University of Lisbon in Portugal where she worked on micro-plastics in freshwater birds and sediments, and completed a number of statistical and mapping courses. Catarina’s PhD project is in collaboration with the amazing folks at Tangaroa Blue.
Over the next three years, she’ll analyse literally millions of data points submitted by citizen scientists to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) to identify plastic pollution hotspots, trends over time, and (most importantly) effective mitigation strategies. For her PhD field work in 2018, she spent 10 days working with Tangaroa and the Mapoon Indigenous rangers removing more than 7000 kg of debris from remote beaches in Cape York!
