Art-sci illustration celebrates Adrift Lab PhD graduation

In November, the #AdriftLab team gathered for one of our famous #WritingRetreats. This one was a little different, however, with two team members about to relocate internationally after being promoted into new and exciting research positions: Dr Jack to the University of Canterbury in NZ and Dr Alix to Stony Brook University in New York. So, while we wrote, shared ideas, and far too many snacks, we also prepared for the inevitable separation that was only days away.
On our final day together, Alix did what she always does: overwhelms us with her creativity, compassion, and thoughtfulness. She presented the team with this image (look 🆙) which shows us together, doing science, in our favourite place #LordHoweIsland.
On the left you can see Dr Megan Grant and photographer, Dr Neal Haddaway, taking a photo of one of our beloved #shearwaters. Next to them are Justin and Caitlin from LHI Marine Parks, they’ve been by our side for longer than most of us can remember. Jack and Alix are in the middle, dutifully removing #plastic from one of the #birds so it can fly away safer and healthier. And finally, on the right are Dr Jenn and Alix, holding the colourful bags we use to catch the birds (handmade for us by the amazing folks at Boomerang Bags).
This one image, designed by the talented illustrator, Clemens Birsak, captures everything that makes us proud to be part of Adrift Lab and the Lord Howe community. These are special people coming together in a remarkable place to support science, conservation, and discovery. This image reflects the love and compassion of one of our PhD graduates for her team, and the shared journey we’ve all been on. Supporting students isn’t just about getting them to the finish line, it’s about building genuine trust, friendship, and finding a community that you can’t wait to see again.
We are all counting the days.
