Adrift Lab presentation about hope

In November, Adrift Lab team member Dr Alex Bond delivered a presentation at the British Ornithologists’ Club annual conference titled “British Avian Odyssey 2025”.

Title of Alex’s talk: Hope in a time of planetary emergency

Alex begins his talk with some harrowing statistics, delivered by ornithologist, Dr Nigel Collar, at another conference earlier this year:

  • 2.9 billions birds lost in North America since 1970
  • 600 million birds lost in Europe since 1980
  • Grassland birds have declined by 67% in Canada since 1970
  • 1400 species are already at global risk of extinction (IUCN RedList VU, EN, CR)
  • 231 species are Critically Endangered
  • 1 in 5 species listed as conservation concern
  • 200 species lost since 1500 (many of these were found only in Australia)
  • 436 species are at higher risk of extinction today than they were when the RedList was first issued in 1988

The state of the natural world, and the world’s birds, is worse today than when I was born in 1983” ~Dr Alex Bond
