Adrift Lab wins prestigious BOU Gibbs Award to study seabird migration
Adrift Lab (Jenn, Alex, and Morgan) are THRILLED to announce we’re the 2021 recipients of the British Ornithologist Union (BOU) Brenda and Tony Gibbs Award which is dedicated to research on tracking and migration studies, including the use of new technologies.
We are honored to be the only successful project (out of a pool of 37 international applicants). We received glowing feedback from the assessment panel regarding our team and project, it was wonderful to read (because it’s all true 😆).
We’ll use these funds (AUD$38k) to purchase high-resolution, solar-powered GPS tracking devices (wow!) so we can track the movements and success of juvenile shearwaters differentially impacted by ingested plastics during their 1st year at-sea. These fancy tags communicate directly with satellites, so we’ll be able to check the progress of our birds in “real time” – follow along with us (and the birds!) starting May 2022 🐤🏝🌊💚
