Today, Monday 11 February 2019, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
•
Adrift lab has some amazing #womeninstem and we wanted to give a big shout out to them for being incredible!

#STEM #science #biology #marineconservation #take3forthesea #plasticpollution #plasticocean #drowninginplastic #saveourseabirds #adriftadventures #birdbanding #seabirds #marinebiology #marinepollution Adrift Lab founder, Dr Jennifer Lavers sent some plastic that had been ingested by flesh-footed shearwaters on Lord Howe island to artist Tina Hinojosa. 🌊
What she made is incredible - a brass and copper kaleidoscope, with micro-plastics encased inside!

A storm petrel banded in July 1981 on the Shetland Islands was re-captured on the Treshnish Isles (NW Scotland) in June 2018. This tiny seabird (~50g) is a remarkable 36 years old!

The proverbial ‘canaries in the [marine] coal mine’. So, as the quantities of plastic skyrocket and forests fall silent, a moments reflection: a sentinel only works when we heed the warning.
Will you listen?"

#saveourseabirds #seabird #birds #plasticpollution #plasticfree #marineconservation #ocean #conservation #science #lordhoweisland #plasticocean #drowninginplastic #zerowaste #anthropocene Catarina ( @catarinaserragon ) is a conservation biologist and one of our amazing PhD candidates at @imas_utas. Catarina tackles the BIG problem of marine plastic pollution using BIG datasets. Together with @tangaroablue she is assessing global policy and gaps in research as well as evaluating the effectiveness of community source reduction plans. Read all about it here: www.adriftlab.org/catarina
How can you help?
Reduce your plastic by going #zerowaste . You can even start your own community clean up group or urge your local cafes to #stopsucking and ditch the straw.
#plasticpollution #plasticfree #marineconservation #ocean #conservation #biology Adrift Lab had a very successful bird banding trip on Tasmanias North coast yesterday. Banding is an important skill for some ecologists and recapturing individuals can tell us a great deal about bird populations.
1/4 | 2/4: Olive Whistlers (Pachycephala olivacea) have a harmonious call that sounds like whistling. We saw this same bird again after we first caught it in September 2018.

2/4: Adrifter Catarina, taking measurements of Brown Thornbill (Acanthiza pusilla), a very tiny woodland bird!

3/4: A Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis), named because or the distinctive markings around the eye. They may be small but believe it or not, they migrate to Northern Australia to escape the cold Tasmanian winters. 🐦

#fieldnotes #bird #birb #tasmania #ecology #conservation #zoology #fieldwork #wildlife #birdsofaustralia #birdbanding 2018 has been a massive year for us here at Adrift Lab. Thank you for all of your support! #2019 is already shaping up to be a huge year so stay tuned as we continue to explore the impacts of #plasticpollution on our environments and wildlife.

Make sure reducing your plastic waste is on your list of New Years resolutions. 🌊

#saveourseabirds #plasticfree #marineconservation #newyearsresolution #seabirds #drowninginplastic #ocean Introducing Peter Puskic. He undertook his honours research year with us, and has just been awarded a @universityoftasmania PhD scholarship to continue his research on the hidden impacts of plastic ingestion in Shearwaters. Peter has also been the recipient of several awards and scholarships over the last few weeks for his amazing research and community outreach, these include a UTAS TUU Mount Nelson Award and a Dean's Summer Research Scholarship. Congratulations Peter!

It's a pellet made by some #seabirds that contains all the indigestable parts of their prey. Usually that's squid beaks and fish bones but increasingly we are finding plastic, metal and even glass!
We had a great day today exploring boluses with student representatives from schools across Tasmania. Some even pledged to make changes and reduce their waste.
#zerowaste #plasticpollution #saveourseabirds #marineconservation #ocean #environment See you later, Dr Alex Bond!
After a productive few weeks writing papers and drinking tea, Alex is returning to the UK where he will continue collaborating with Adrift lab at the @natural_history_museum Tring in his role as senior curator in change of #Birds.
Our team is spread over various global projects and its very rare to have the lab group together in one room!
